Excursions Outside of Las Vegas
- Hoover Dam
The highest concrete dam in the Western Hemisphere, named one of the world's seventh engineering wonders.
The Hoover Dam is one of the greatest engineering projects ever accomplished. Built during the Depression, regulates the flow of the mighty Colorado river and created Lake Mead.
The dam is located 34 miles southeast of Las Vegas on US Highway 93 at the Nevada-Arizona border.
Getting There: Go east on flamingo or Tropicana to U.S. 515 south, which automatically turns into 93 south and takes you right to the dam. Go past the turnoff to Lake Mead. As you near the dam, you'll see a 5-story parking area - Park for $2 and take the elevators or stairs to the Visitor Center.
Thirty-minute tours of the dam depart from the reception Lobby every 15 minutes. Admission is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors, $2 for kids 6-16.
- Lake Mead/Boulder City
With 1.5 million acres, Lake Mead is twice the size of Rhode Island and is the largest man made body of water in the United States. It is home to bighorn sheep, mule deer, coyotes, kit foxes, bobcats, ringtail cats, desert tortoise, numerous lizards and snakes, and a host of bird species.
A great way to enjoy Lake mead is on a cruise aboard the Desert Princess (702 293-6180), a Mississippi-style paddlewheeler. Cruises depart year-round from a terminal near Lake Mead Lodge, past through Black Canyon and colorful rock formations, en route to Hoover Dam. Excursions run 10AM, noon, 2PM, and 4PM daily. Adults $18, Children $9.
- Red Rock Canyon
Take a scenic drive through the blazing red rock formations that is only 16 miles west of Las Vegas. You can drive the panoramic 13-mile Scenic Drive or explore it on foot. There are picnic areas along the drive and just 5 miles south is Bonnie Springs Old Nevada, a vivid replica of the old western town with wooden sidewalks, complete with gun fights and hangings.
Getting There: Drive west on Charleston Boulevard(It runs East-West from one side of Las Vegas to the other), go west on Charleston Boulevard for 17 miles, which becomes Nev 193. Almost as soon as you leave the city, the red rocks begin to loom around you. The Visitors Center (702 515-5350) will appear to your right that says red Rock Scenic Drive, which marks the actual entrance to the park. The Center is open from 8:30AM to 4:30PM
- VALLEY OF FIRE STATE PARK
Over 26,000 acres of beautiful sand stone mark the existence of an early Indian civilization in this desert park. Located just 52 miles northeast of Las Vegas (702 397-2088).
Getting There: From Las Vegas take I-15 north to exit 75 (Valley of Fire turnoff)
- Mt.Charleston/Lee Canyon
A cool oasis in dry southern Nevada with beautiful forests, picnic facilities, a hotel, hiking trails, camping area, and lodge.. The mountain is Nevada's fifth-highest at 12,000 feet and is located only 35 miles northwest of Las Vegas off Highway 95.
- Death Valley
For the really adventurous, one of the most rugged, brutal, and beautiful desert spots is only a few hours from Las Vegas.
Located about 145 miles west of Las Vegas. Take US Highway 95 north to Lathrop Wells and turn at the Death Valley junction.
- Grand Canyon
300 miles from Las Vegas - The most exciting way to view this geological wonder is from the air via Helicopter or via Grand Canyon Tours
